Atlantic + Pacific Peak Combo

In October of 2016 my partner and I triggered a mini rock slide on Pacific peak that resulted in broken bones and injuries between the two of us. Luckily, we were able to self evacuate, but Pacific peak loomed over us after that.
In 2019 I returned to climb Pacific Peak and seek closure after the accident. I chose to come from the opposite side from the Atlantic and the connecting saddle this time. Opposite from the first attempt.
I took the standard route up Atlantic Peak and combined Pacific in a combo route from Mayflower Gulch. The connecting saddle between the Atlantic and Pacific is straightforward. The final push up Pacific is steep and not the greatest rock.
I descended Pacific’s ridge and passed directly above where the accident took place. The rock was just as loose and steep as I remembered and memorable as being less enjoyable on the descent than the day we attempted the route before evac.
I was happy to be back down on more stable ground and after a successful solo day hiking both peaks with all fingers still intact this time.
Leadville is one of my most favorite mountain towns. A little gem with plenty of local options. Definitely spend some time here as you're passing through or even stay overnight to get better acclimated for your hike if you're coming from sea level.
Local jams: Tennessee Pass Cafe, City on a Hill Coffee, Casa Sanchez, Buchi Cafe Cubano.
