In 2016 I worked an absurd amount of overtime and was nearly on call 24-7, unfortunately including my days off. I often escaped to no cell range in the mountains. This particular day I took a midweek day off to escape the noise and chaos. Ironically this trip ended with another fire to extinguish at work, but at least I had a few hours of peace.
I love Fourmile Creek Trailhead and the peaks surrounding it as a training ground. My favorite time to go is the week when you avoid the crowds. I chose to do a 13er loop of Sheridan, Peerless and Horseshoe this outing.
I hiked from the 4WD lot toward Sheridan which was surprisingly steeper on the last push than anticipated. I was also surprised by the rock shelters at the top which offered excellent coverage from the relentless wind as I snacked on the summit.
After a brief summit break while watching all the ants march up Sherman’s standard route I descended toward Peerless and the connecting saddle ridge.
Peerless is literally a bump on the ridge. Simple, though enjoyable. I took a quick photo or two and dashed onward to Horseshoe. The ascent is mild and gradual with great views of the surrounding basin. I passed a couple people on their way down and then enjoyed the summit to myself.
I had no idea about the mine shelter prior to this day and was surprised to find it on the wind flat summit of Horseshoe.
Looking back, I soaked in the views of Peerless, Sheridan and Sherman above the basin. Then I headed down to the gentle saddle between Peerless and Horseshoe to descend back to the road and the car.
Fairplay is a lovely little town with plenty of food and drink options.
