A friend of ours from the CMC organized an annual Lake City weekend climbing trip for the club and my partner and I spontaneously decided on an impromptu trip. We weren’t participating in the actual organized event but figured we’d crash the party and climb with friends both new and old.
Arriving late the night before we planned to climb we took the pup on a headlamp walk around town and enjoyed the local wildlife sightings.
The following morning we woke up early, made a big breakfast for fuel and took the dog for a walk past the park to see what crowds were looking like. We quickly packed up and made our way back over to snag a line just as the group we knew had already set theirs. Bonus routes!
We set our rope and then swapped belays with friends so we could enjoy different routes. After some laps I went back up and pulled our rope to set a new route past the anchors. We rapped down and then swapped belays on a few more lines before ending the day.
The whole group enjoyed a few beers at Lake City Brewing together before parting ways back to the cabins for dinner.
A great weekend seeing familiar faces and climbing with a great group!
About the park:
Lake City is a smaller local ice park and doesn’t get as much attention as Ouray although it is drawing in more of a crowd now. Support the locals by grabbing a coffee and a burrito at the local breakfast cafe or stop by Lake City Brewing for snacks and beers.
If you are able to support the park they could use donations to help with the recent costs associated with the expansion they completed in 2021. Help our local ice park thrive and grow!

In general Lake City is a wonderful little town to visit and explore surrounded by pristine wilderness and mountain views.
