The popular “Decalibron” loop connecting Mount Democrat, Cameron, Lincoln and Bross is a busy area with high traffic from Kite Lake on a weekend. Luckily this day in 2013 we evaded the crowds with the exception of a few small groups between Democrat and Lincoln. We enjoyed the summits of Mount Lincoln and Bross to ourselves, though.
In hindsight I would reverse the route we chose if I returned to these peaks. The chossy descent down Bross is not enjoyable and made for slow going. I would, instead, ascend Bross and come down the better trail on Democrat.
After the combo Grays and Torreys route the year before I was starting to get hooked on this multiple peaks in one day idea. Big loops were starting to become my thing!
We had great weather and a lovely casual day on this loop, mostly just the two of us!
Alma is a special place that often gets overlooked, especially considering Breckenridge sits directly across the pass. One of my first appreciations for Alma was the locals and their no corporation attitude, leave that in Breckenridge. I'm sure as the years go by we will see this tiny gem get over developed as we have seen in other Colorado mountain towns, but I hope it stays quiet and quaint for years to come.
If you swing through, definitely make a pitstop at the only bar in Alma. Local legends, the town pup that once got lost on the 14ers and made it home. Good people, food and drink.
