This supermoon hike was, ironically, the earliest I had started a 14er hike to date in my journey. After the rewards of that decision I changed that behavior after this trip.
My partner and I had planned a hike of Mount Elbert one night when a supermoon was forecasted. We drove out to the trailhead late that evening to catch a nap with the intention of starting around midnight. We brought our pup with us to enjoy the mellow, albeit steep, trail.
We hiked nearly the entire route by moonlight, rarely needing to use our headlamps. I remember crossing paths with a scary set of glowing eyes at one point, but luckily we did just that and went our separate directions.
We were the first on the mountain that morning as we soaked in the sunrise views from 14,433 feet. This was our dog Diezels first 14er and he did great on the mellow trail. The sunrise views were epic above the lakes with cotton candy like colors showing off at the highest point in Colorado.
Leadville is one of my most favorite mountain towns. A little gem with plenty of local options. Definitely spend some time here as you're passing through or even stay overnight to get better acclimated for your hike if you're coming from sea level.
Local jams: Tennessee Pass Cafe, City on a Hill Coffee, Casa Sanchez, Buchi Cafe Cubano.
