Having recently repeated Sherman I was surprised by how much has changed since my first hike in 2013. For one, there are numerous cut trails and switchbacks all over the mountain and the saddle between it and sheridan. The highest mine structure is no longer standing upright as it was my first trip.
My 14er count nearly doubled in 2013 in terms of how many peaks I climbed within the season in comparison to the years before. I remember having more confidence with Sherman like things were clicking, I was more familiar with different ranges and peaks in Colorado and hiking more responsibly with some gained humility yet plenty more to learn.
We chose a bluebird Labor Day weekend to hike Sherman and luckily experienced little traffic for a holiday. There were tons of rock shelters on the summit and we sat down to enjoy the views and snacks. This was the year I also learned about the magic month of September and some of the days we are afforded for hiking at that time of year.
I enjoy looking back at these photos and please I have photos of the mine structure while it was still intact before it collapsed a few years ago. Thankfully I have these photos from 2013!
I love Sherman and the surrounding peaks! A great area to train, adventure, camp, nap in the car or just soak in the views!
Fairplay is a lovely little town with plenty of food and drink options.
Check out these local spots: Brown Burro Cafe, South Park Brewing.
