Pikes Peak via Crags

Hiking via the Crags route for Pikes Peak is a long slog, especially in snow. We chose this route as a weight training hike during our High Altitude Mountaineering School training period in 2018. The route itself is enjoyable and fairly easy going in terms of ascending elevation until the final push.

This was a long slog in terms of route. The Crags route for Pikes Peak, especially with snow, is a long day car-to-car. We were training for our high altitude mountaineering school and an upcoming Rainier objective in 2018 so we chose this as a beast of a training day. The route itself is enjoyable and fairly easy in terms of ascending elevation. The last push is a little soul-sucking and maybe the slog out back to the car.

Around 17 miles and over 4,000 feet of elevation make for an ass kicking and throw in snow you have yourself a proper sufferfest. I still enjoyed the hike despite being underwhelming and the popular traffic you see on Pikes summit. ‍

All-in-all we still had a great day although the slog back to the car was a little soul-crushing. Still a good day up high!

Otherwise, I encourage you to stop in Manitou Springs when passing through to enjoy local spots as well as walking around the unique little mountain town.

Local spots: Maintou Brewing, Adam's Cafe, Crystal Park Cantina.
