The bike or cycling community in Denver is large and several fun community groups exist who host fun rides and bike events all year round. There’s something for everyone in terms of types of riders and bikes be it fixie, mountain bike, gravel, road or cruiser — you name it!
The Highlands Cruiser Club defines the group as “An alternative to all the other bicycle cruiser rides in Colorado, the Highlands cruiser Club is about the people, the bikes, and the cruising. We meet on Fridays in the parks, bars, and back yards of the greater Highlands neighborhood before setting off on a slow ride around town. We share a drink, toast the end of the week, and see where our bikes take us. Spontaneity is the only rule, and no ride is the same. No costumes are required and everyone is welcome. You are, however, encouraged to show off your cool cruiser bike.”
A friend from my hometown was living in the Highlands neighborhood as a roomie with a subset of this larger community at the time. He invited my partner and I to join for a ride and we obliged! Nearly every Friday this group rides, at least a handful of people and sometimes larger groups gather.
Denver Cruisers is another popular group that hosts wacky costume rides and perhaps the reason I overlooked this unique club to begin with. A great community of people, no doubt, we met some really humble and awesome people that night!
We had a blast socializing in the hosts backyard and then a casual ride around Denver on a cool summer evening. Fun costumes, bikes, people, music and riding through numerous parks and streets — fun was had! We even capped the evening, ahem morning, with breakfast and coffee at Village Inn, something I hadn’t done since maybe college or before.
Loved every minute of it! I highly recommend joining this fine group of folks if fun-havery, costumes and great company is your jam!
